Off the TePoel: Twins Missing Pieces, Unimpressive in Opener
Well, let’s quickly forget this one and move on to the rest of the season. Tonight provided a glimpse of what the offense may look like without Mauer, although most nights they won’t be facing Felix Hernandez.
A couple of interesting decisions from Gardy tonight: A) sitting Young B) Hitting Cuddy in the three hole facing a guy he went 0-12 (?) against previously. Well, Cuddy struck out three times but managed the only RBI so I give him that.
I also thought the Twins had poor base running and could have scored more than the one run that inning, despite Morneau’s double play.
How about that bullpen? Good start for Ayala, not so good for the guys who couldn’t stop the bleeding last year. I know Guerrier isn’t charged a run, but that passed ball/mixup with Redmond and the following single left me disappointed. Throw strikes guys, we’re already down three.
And lastly, for quick thoughts: Liriano looked sharp and pitched well enough to win, but I disagree with Bert’s mid-game analysis of “outstanding”. I wouldn’t consider giving up two home runs a part of an outstanding game.
The Twins will face a tough challenge tomorrow in lefty Erik Bedard, but I have confidence this team will play much better, even if the result is the same. Look on the bright side, Detroit and Cleveland also both were destroyed tonight by preseason prognosticated mediocrity in Toronto and Texas.
