Off the TePoel: Can the Twins Beat the Yankees?
No.
They just missed out on a great opportunity with the bases loaded and two outs. Unfortunately, Cuddyer took the best pitch he saw in the at-bat, a strike one fastball up around the belt on the outer half of the plate. After that he let Burnett take control after half swinging at low fastball on a 1-1 count. He missed just as badly on strike three.
Cuddyer is putting together a great season. If he stays healthy he’ll approach numbers I thought out of his reach – 30 HR and 100 RBI. With that said, he’s only hitting .143 with the bases loaded and .250 overall with runners in scoring position. From a managerial standpoint, Kubel has usually been following Morneau in the lineup and is hitting .346 against right handed pitching this season, Cuddyer at .274. Why Gardy had Cuddyer following Morneau tonight is a question I’d be asking after the game.
Congratulations to Bobby Keppel for his spectacular performance in relief since being called up. It only took about 4 or 5 tries, but the Twins finally found a fit from the minors.
Just one more Yankee appearance at the dome after tonight, barring potential postseason play. Then we can put that Ruben Sierra homerun off Juan Rincon and many other Yankee victories to bed and start a new tradition at Target Field.
Here’s to the Twins playing the AL Central about 75% of the time from August through the end of the season!
